Well, maybe in video games, but in rpg's the original Wartecher would prolly be old 'elf' class in original D&D (fighter/magic-user).

I'd probably go closer with the Cleric class in D&D, as long as the weapon was the bludgeoning kind. Still, the warmage goes so far back, you might as well predate console games, and most computer games for that matter.

But still, you'll find plenty of sightings for the WarTecher or Battle Mage, etc. FFs Red Mage is one good example. Alis is another, given the fact we're talking Phantasy Star there.

Only reason I said elf instead of cleric is because the original D&D elves could wear armor, use most (but not all) weapons, and could cast spells. Clerics are pretty similar, but only blunt weapons, and they were basically like fighting priests. To me wartechers are more like HUnewearls which are basically fighter/magic-users. You know, comfy with a sword AND with casting spells, not just healers with armor and maces.

But, um... Okay, yeah, I *am* that big a geek.

Not a problem. (Yeah, I can say that here without the censorship unlike in PSU).

I'm a little hazy on the original D&D elves, but you might be right about that. However, my memory isn't from playing them, but from remembering some old pictures of D&D elves. I believe they did match your description.
