Assuredly, you're not the only one. I'm reminded of a comic that makes your point.
I've never actually had this problem, two reasons though.
1. I'm not the talkative guy around people I don't know, so I'm usually left alone
2. when I do talk, I always have my head turned a bit to the side so my left is facing them, because I'm deaf in my right ear
