The main character escapes the supermarket with his son and five other people. Three of them get killed by some Grass Assassain looking thing while his son, a woman, an old couple, and himself escape in his truck in the parking lot of the store.
They continue driving trying to find a way out of the mist but while traveling run out of gas. They hear noises outside the car assuming the noises were from the insects they sat in the car awaiting their doom. The main character finds a gun in the car with four bullets. Since they would rather die from the gun then a horrible, painful, and slow death from the insects they decide to shoot themselves. NOW there are five of them in the car and only four bullets. The main character shoots the old couple, the woman, and his son. He was going to let the insects kill him. When he got out the truck to wait for his end, the mist clears up and the US Army comes rolling by with the suvivors from the supermarket and all the insects killed. So now he is left all alone.
