Probably using a BMP/JPEG converter, lots of them tend to do that (might want to try out IrfanView, doesn't have that bright side effect)

Sorry about my bright screenshots. I use FRAPS to take my screenshots and have it set to convert them to JPEG. I also play with the high brightness settings too.
