Turn off all sigs and flash and words. All the words turned off would make it go faster, like "speed holes."

They have $400 range ones now with 10" or less screens.

and more HDD than my desktop from only 2-3 yrs ago

But then there's also the mega super computer, PSP sized that doesn't work well or exactly like a computer - plus is costs more than $400. Buy it or you won't be cool by way of how much you spent on junk gadget despite and in spite of economy! (I guess you're buying import <-> export for world trade GDP, but not much)
