b.)Are they only only compatible with the JP version of PSP2?

Infinity Full Version only, but you could try to activate them in the demo to see if it's there. Unlikely that they'll be present though.

So I just started typing in the passwords for about 25 of the first Infinity items and thought "This is taking soooooo long!!! I hate this kb setup!!!"

For those of you who want an easier time typing them in (this may already be posted somewhere else), I just figured it out:

Go to your option menu, then the 4th option from the bottom which reads "キーボード入力形式". Select the first option (which is not the default and why it's so annoying to begin with): "通常入力". There ya go, normal keyboard back just like in PSP2!
