On freeplay you can select from a list of preset phrases.

Playing with friendcodes you can chat by writing on the screen with your stylus, or by selecting user created saved stylus drawings.

There is no mic or keyboard support in any version.

In a game with friends, it's a pictochat-like interface, which lets you draw/write, to communicate.
