Adding to Karen and trying help the Guardians Training:
Well, Iam used to change the place of LOG/BACKUP/SCREENS folders, because iam not fan of my documents/user folder hehe, then I preffer change place to avoid lost my screens/logs in future OS updates or formatting and so...
you can set the place of each one of these folders, in lines bellow:

LOG_PATH=
BACKUP_PATH=
SCREENSHOT_PATH=
These lines are found in "PsuIlluminus.ini", which is located in:

windows XP:
X:\Documents and settings\YOUR USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\SEGA\PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE Illuminus

Windows 7 (and probabbly vista too):
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\SEGA\PHANTASY STAR UNIVERSE Illuminus

If your OS is none of these, look in two locations, or use search for "PsuIlluminus.ini".
only make sure that your system is showing hidden files, in order to found the hidden folder that its placed..
Its how I set my folders (in same place of PSU game folder):

JP PSU seems very intimidating from my standpoint.

How would we even go about communicating on the JP servers? I guess most of the problem is just trying to wrap my head around the language of the game. How to even navigate correctly through the menus or even search for items.

And according to the video, it seems Free course disallows us from entering our room. So we've lost the ability of our shops right?

Despite these challenges I would like to give it a go. The Judgment Coat has caught my eye.

It's not that hard as you may think. Everyone who played PSU for quite a time knows automatically where he can find stuff in the menues.
Besides this point, that's why me and TenebriS started this, to help anyone who needs help in any case of PSU Japan. I'm sure you would be able to understand the important things of this all quite fast.

To answer your question:
Yes, during Free Course you can't use your room and player shops. That's a function which is only for Premium players. Once you pay for playing you have all the functions you had on PSU EU/US PC or have on 360's and more!

So I guess unless I pay my monthly fee, I'd have to live on farming for my income?

How would payment work? I heard US credit cards wouldn't work, but I'm not too sure about that.

Unless you pay your monthly fee you can't use player shops, so you have live from what you find.

Can't tell you about US Credit cards, but with european ones it works very well. Never had any problems to pay.
