In Ad-Hoc Mode, it's the same as story mode (for inviting NPC's to your party). I wouldn't think it would be different if you're actually online, but the most I've done for online is look at game names in the lobby, so I could be wrong (and I can't look now, either, as I have no Wi-Fi at home).

No you are right for the most part. The only difference is that on Online Mode you need to partition the number of AI partners to your room. This means that number of allowed human players to come to your room will decrease as you increas the number of AI partners.
