Thread: F2P vs P2P

  1. #1

    Default F2P vs P2P

What would you rather have? If given the choice.

    Free To Play (F2P)

    - Free to download and play.
    - Easily accessible to a wide range of people.
    - (In PSO2's case) You pay for Premium ($16.00) if you want to have Player Trading, Your Room, Selling In Shop, and Expanded Storage.
    - Pay for Scape Dolls
    - Pay for almost any new clothing, and because it's a Gacha, you're never guaranteed to get any of what you what, even with 30 spins.
    - Prices for purchasable items are on the more expensive side.
    - One character slot, unless another is paid for.
    - Overall spend much more money for a full experience. However, you have the choice to not spend anything, to play.
    - Ability to purchase items that give you an advantage, in terms of EXP Multipliers and Rare Boosters.

    OR

    Pay To Play (P2P).

    - Only playable if Purchased from retail, or game license download.
    - Niche community due to the large amount of money needed to pay upfront.
    - Requires a monthly subscription to access online, on top of initial purchase.
    - All game content is available to you through other in game assets, such as quests, and meseta.
    - No unfair advantages such as purchasing "Rare Boosters".

Personally, I prefer P2P. Don't get ripped off at every corner you turn, for stuff that is almost essential to play the game with any chance of being "successful" in terms of meseta. Plus, you can see where they're blatantly trying to make you pay for it. Such as, healing requires you to stand still. Obviously in the interest of getting you killed, and paying for a Scape Doll. Or, instead of allowing the purchase of individual clothing, they put it in a gacha so your chances are slim to get what you want on the first spin, and have to continue paying to get it. Making leveling up take forever to encourage EXP multipliers, and Rare boosters since rares are suuuuuuper rare. Things like that annoy me to no end. I like that I can bring friends onto a F2P game, and I'm not "needing" to pay for stuff. However I also hate the idea of other people having some sort of an advantage because they spend tons of money on rare boosters, and hit level cap with exp multipliers, before everyone else.

    F2P for me.

It's already decided by SEGA though, they will not change it no matter what we say.

I know most hardcore players will prefer P2P because they get more bang for their buck that way, but the fact is that F2P keeps the majority of casual players happy. And that's all SEGA cares about. In the end, Casual Gamers >>>> Hardcore Gamers.

I'm a minimalist. I can live with very little. And doing Free to Play, I can say to my friends "This game is completely free! You don't have to pay anything to play it! So hurry up and keep me company!".

If it were P2P, I'd have to say "Yeah, pay $50 to get the game, then $15 a month to continue playing. Oh, and spend hours each day leveling up your character to do the fun stuff which is actually at the level cap, which takes as long as a real game to reach."
    I'm not bitter...

Basically, this is the only online game I've ever played where I was able to get a friend to play with me. And that makes everything else worthwhile.

Paying for skill resets, myroom, and extra mags is kind of a joke, though.

F2P. I'd rather just buy a little bit of stuff here and there, instead of pay a larger subscription fee (and the price of the game).

Free to Play is perfectly fine for me, I usually only get things every once in while so this gives me the ability to have fun at no cost to me when I want to and if I can, splurge some money on it when I have the opportunity to... It just gives me more freedom in the long run.

F2P. I feel like most of what's available for premium is available rightfully so (that is, stuff that would otherwise be available if the game were subscription-only), and the online gaming world as it stands right now is much more open to a Freemium model than subscription-based, so Sega's in the right with this model.

For PSO veterans, staying F2P may seem a little weird, but you just have to remember that you were subscribing to PSO/PSU and therefore paying to play, so they had to provide a lot of things to make it worth it. PSO2 is more than worth it... especially compared to PSU.

The only smarter thing they could do right now is refund everyone who played PSU so we could spend it on Arkz Cash.

F2P is fine. If they let us trade free too, I could happily play without spending a dime. I still can, mostly, since trading only becomes particularly relevant at the higher end of the level range anyways.

The lack of free trading only comes at a price when you want to give something to someone, otherwise you can just use the 3 day shop passes from the FUN drawings to sell stuff for free, that's my plan for the time being

Only problem with this, is that it is proven in a lot of P2P MMO's such as PSU or TERA, the subscription fee is the same or lower in most cases.

Yes, but that also excludes people who aren't going to be buying things every month... F2P reaches a wider audience and allows people to play regardless of their financial situation or setup... its a convenience issue really.
