Farrid frowned. "Still, he's been gone for a really long time..."
The sand had died down, and the seemingly endless stream of darkers had just...stopped. There were no machines. No fighting. An extremely eerie quiet had descended over the base. Farrid Invaal and JOE were sitting against one of the APCs, resting. The blue haired ranger cradled her vita rifle in her hands.
"He's still taking too long."
JOE, a drink in her hand, looked to her right at the Tiger Pierce clad girl. "You seem very... attached to Enforcer, Ms. Invaal."
Farrid's cheeks turned a slight pink, "We've known each other for a while, that's all."
"Hmm..." JOE took a sip from her drink before standing up. "Don't let your feelings cloud your judgment in a fight. Affection can be a deadly enemy." She walked off as Farrid grumbled.
"Hoy...we aren't like that."
A few moments later there was rumbling and shouting. There was a man shouting, and the voice sounded familiar.
"The underground entrance...to the Northeast! Send reinforcements, that idiot Enforcer is out there fighting by himself!"
Farrid was on her feet in a split second and slipped through the space between two APCs. She put a hand up to her earpiece.
“JOE, we’re going.”
“Going…where? Over.”
“To the structure En was ordered to investigate. He’s alone up there.”
“…How do you know? Wasn’t Hammer 8-1 supposed to go reinforce him? Over.”
“Hammer 8-1 is here yelling!”
“…So that was them. I’m on my way. Over.”
“Alright.”
Farrid fidgeted for a moment before contacting the Commander.
“Commander Juniper, permission to head to the abandoned structure to the Northeast?”
“Who is this I’m speaking to? …Invaal. You were with Enforcer when he arrived. Hammer 8-1 has been disp-”
“Hammer 8-1 is here yelling about how Enforcer is fighting alone right now!”
There was a pause and then silence over the channel. “…That damned Welrich. Understood, Ms. Invaal. Take Hammer 8-1 and go reinforce Enforcer. Juniper out.”
“Th-thank you, ma’am!”
She looked at Welrich. “HOY! HAMMER 8-1! We’re going to get En!”
Welrich looked over. “What? I’ve got a wounded man here! The reason we left was because Enforcer told us to!”
“Wh-wha… Well leave one man to look after him and then let’s go! En is fighting alone, right!?”
A short while and one disgruntled Welrich later, the group reached a wreckage pile. Jumping off, the blue haired Ranger’s eyes were immediately drawn to a shape in the sand. She started running.
“Oh, light, no…”
It was bulky.
“En…”
It was humanoid.
“En..!”
It was sparking – a hole.
“EN!”
Farrid fell to her knees next to the Cast, immediately pulled out several tools, and went to work.
“We need to get him back somehow, he isn’t dead yet, his core is still active, but we can’t save him here! JOE, make sure nothing sneaks up on us, and someone get me some MagLevs!”
The heavy gray frame was motionless as the others moved, Farrid leaning over it. After a few minutes, Welrich procured what looked like six round magnets with nozzles on them. As Welrich was about to hand the magnets off, the sparking grey body bucked, a digitized voice saying “EM 223549; EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL UNIT – POSTED ON PLANET NABERIUS, OUTPOST LOCATION PROSPECT. ERROR-ERROR-ERROR.”
The body grew silent again. Farrid stared a moment before wondering aloud, “Experimental control…? No time, we have to move him!” They attached the magnets, which actually had small repulsers, and lifted his frame out of the sand and onto the APC. Then they all started to head back. No one noticed that the entire time, one part of Enforcer’s body had remained locked in position; his right hand, still slightly cupped as if trying to cradle the side of a face. Nor did anyone realize that currently, he was forcibly reliving one of his worst memories.
Prospect.
I wish to point out that magnets erase data stored on hardware.
I'm aware. However - the magnets in this case were attached to his arms, legs and hips. Most sensitive data for casts, for the sake of the story, is housed in the upper torso and head. In En's case, specifically, he's been specially hardened against many types of electronic data corruption or lose, including magnets.
And the MagLevs were specifically designed to move large electronic equipment, and Casts, like they were used in this case.
Or, we could just go with "Because Photons", if you guys prefer.
I am alright with "Because Photons."
Our magnets are different.
