For a beginner, I would start with Hunter & then work your way into Fighter (go ahead & level up both, though).

Fighter can do more damage, but a very common problem is that inexperienced players see all the amazing Critical Buffs & Limit Break damage from Fighter & try to immediately go for them. Their lack of experience & the fact that Limit Break temporarily reduces your HP by 75%, they end up dying multiple times each mission.

All the Damage Buffs in the world don't mean a damn thing if your face is in the dirt from trying to face-tank with 190HP.

    Spoiler!

How do you pick Fighter as your main class? I don't see the option to at character creation page for fighter (just hu, fo, ra, br and bo)

You'll have to change to it at the class counter once you get in game.

In general, prioritize upping Hunter (for subclass use), because it works very well with most other classes.

Hunter seems a bit slow. Are there a few faster paced classes?

Is it better to level the main class first (br/fi/bo) or the subclass first (hu) and then just switch around them?

dig deeper with whichever one you find more fun to play with first. you're going to need to level both anyway, but it is much, much, MUCH easier to level new classes once you have one done to around 50.
