For those who miss DF and those things, probably you don't have to worry, I think. Did you see that boy sitting on the bed in the video? He's really fishy. Probably a DF.
In the broadcast, the directors said all those random things were born from the fear and anxiety people have( sounds a bit Silent Hill). It's pretty similar to how the DFs were born. ARKS found a DF or another menace and trying to get rid of it.
If SEGA doesn't go too much into high school life, you can still see the ARKS saga. They are just introducing high school everyday life as a spice.

As it's been said numerous times by now, expecting something that's not a joke from PSO2 is futile. Look at all the Rappies, Lillipans, Nyau, Umblla, Boing etc. Look at all the loli, bikini and tsundere dragons. Look at Falz Arms and Double, and then at Apprentice Gia's ...thing.
And, just to remind you, the game starts off with a black guy dying from a spider.
I'd want a more or less serious Phantasy Star story again, but face it - it's just not happening.
