Setting up a Minecraft Server for a beginner ..How?.

I need help setting up a Minecraft server, and we are talking beginner's level. Does anybody have a good few pointers?

Basically, download the server client, set up a few steps, share the IP+port with friends (if your IP is dynamic you may need an extra program like NoIP) and that's it, you may have to limit some parameters if the server (your computer) is too slow (too many people ? reduce distant view, etc).
