well, acording to evolution they most likely changed due to mutations, that said, every friggen monkey is not going to be born with the mutation, also, once it reaches a certain severity they can only mate with other monkeys that have similar mutations. It is random if it happens, and it's not going to happen to every monkey.

pretty much, at least according to evolution. The theory leans heavily on the idea that random mutations that actually helped the animal survive and reproduce offspring with that same mutation to survive. survival of the fittest (natural selection) and eventually the smartest coupled with mutations is pretty much the backbone of the theory.
