Fleece, You meet him online get his card and if you message him he'll joins your party and steal all your rares.
So far, we know of one NPC for each race. After completing a tutorial segment, you get the Partner Card of the NPC matching your character's race: Humans get Hyuuga, Newmen get Maya, Beasts get Leogini, and Casts get Lou. The most recent news posting reveals that Leia Martinez is another NPC whose Partner Card you can get eventually, and there are more yet to be revealed.
the first ones are based on your character's race. you can get their partner card by doing the tutorial.

Yeah but ethan may die at the end of singleplayer, if hes online youd know he survives.

that's what the offline story will show what happens to the rest of them.
the reason Ethan, Karen and Mirei might not be online NPCs is because maybe after saving the worlds, they get promoted and end up being very busy leaders and stuff, too busy to go hunting.
Well that would suck....for karen at least....everyone likes karen!....
but it would be funny if you could learn from super eathen....

I hope we get to play with a lot of different NPCs. I loved playing with the tough ones in PSO.
