I was thinking about playing with a focus on Ranger this time around, but when I think about how much they sucked (IMHO) in PSO, I'm a little frightened. Could anyone tell me how they play on PSU, and, mostly, if it is fun?

Rangers were great in PSO and they are probably great on PSU as well.
Well, like I said before, I hated PSO RAs. It was so boring to just stand there and shoot. It looks better on PSU, but I would like the opinion of a Beta player.
Depends on you played the class, man. I a few rangers and I had a lot of fun. I used rifles and melee weapons so I never got bored. Maybe you need to explore the class some more (in PSO)?
Well it is a bit funner when you have a group and a good weapon, but I can't play PSOGC online, so its all offline with people level 80ish when my RA is like 20ish.
Its gets better. Rangers are tiresome in the early levels, but if you stick through it and get to Very Hard and Ultimate, you can get some decent rares and have some fun. Then again, playing offline can be boring period.
Shooting like melee has no "combo" feater you shoot almost as fast as you can press the button. There is a default delay between shots but its short and after 3 shots you don't "pause". Theres also a aiming system which is neat for hitting monsters that fell down or in the air. I'm not sure if aiming at a normal monsters head or other vital spots grants more damage.
