I just had a thought and am curious enough to just ask instead of waiting, but do the various weapons change in overall appearance as they move up in rank (C to B, etc.), and if so, is it a drastic change?

While there are a few errant ones in rank B, the "drastic changes" don't really occur until you hit rank A and S weapons (7 stars and higher). Most of the lower ranked weapons are the more common, mass produced, standard issue type things.
