Do you have to beat the mission to get to its lobby?

Read the manual and nothing helpful was in there, also tried asking people online and no one knew.

I believe so, because when I die and i'm on the first mission, it chucks me out to the city, and on the second missions it sends me back to the lobby of the first mission.

You either need to:
1) Beat the mission and move to the lobby
2) Be in a party whose Leader is in the Mid-lobby. Speak to the Female cast attendant by the entrance to the mission counter and you can be warped to it.
