The latest issue of Famitsu (summarized at NeoGAF) brings some very interesting revelations about another installment of the Phantasy Star franchise, this time on the PSP handheld system! What is currently being called "Phantasy Star Portable" will be based on Phantasy Star Universe and its latest expansion, Ambition of the Illuminus.

The PSP title is said to include an all-new story mode with added missions and a multi-player mode that supports cooperative play up to four players (appears to be local multiplayer only). Judging from the scans we've seen of the two-page Famitsu preview, it also looks like there will be at least two additional characters introduced: Vivienne, a cast who players will team up with in the story, and Helga Neumann, a villain who is responsible for terrorist attacks in the Gurhal System.

Phantasy Star Portable is slated for a 2008 release in Japan. Stay glued to PSOW as we continue to dig up more information and preview translations on this somewhat unexpected surprise! You may also want to join in on the rapidly growing discussion in our Phantasy Star Universe forums. A big thanks to Helly for relaying this news to us, and beatrixkiddo for providing a preliminary scan of the article.

A surprise message scrolled at the top of everyone's screens on the PC/PS2 servers a short while ago resulting in many Guardian's reporting to the Guardian's HQ on Universe 10. This however was in error. In the aftermath, some new information was given out.
    • Tails statues will be delivered some time in October.
At one point it appeared that 11/20 had been confirmed for Ambition of the Illuminus but chillaura eventually went on after the event to say that it was a store date from Wal-Mart.

As for the message itself, it apparently was supposed to only go to one player and not the whole PC/PS2 community. You can see chillaura's apology here. You can also discuss this happening on our PSU General board here.

As some of you may be aware, some of the new equipment released in the recent patch has been disappearing. Sega Admin Clumsyorchid has made a statement specifically about the Deva-zashi weapon.
"For the time being, please do not attempt to create this item, we would hate to have further losses to character inventory. At the present time, we have one or two cases, both confirmed through our database.

Please accept our apologies with this inventory issue, we are working to get it resolved as soon as possible. Thanks for your understanding!"
Sega is currently investigating if this issue affects other items as well. For the moment if you find one, don't attempt to synth it until Sega completes its investigation. If you have already started synthing it, do NOT take it out of your Partner Machinery.

From April 24th to May 8th, all rare drops on the Japanese Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst servers are being multiplied by two. As usual, this drop increase only pertains to games that are playing in a mission, (Hunters Guild quest and such) rather than in the free mode.

Sega came out with the japanese version of Phantasy Star Universe unprepared for the flood of players that would be jamming its servers. With confirmed reports that SEGA has already had to order more printings of the game, reports are now quickly showing that there are ID numbers in game to conincide that there 100,000 registered accounts at this moment. However due to the limitations of the servers, SEGA can only accomodate 20,000 players on it's servers at this time. Sega has confirmed this issue, and is scheduling to have more servers installed tomorrow.

Are you one of the players that is locked out because of this limit? Discuss it with us in our Phantasy Star Universe forum.

SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe, Ltd. today announced a new partnership with PROPE, Ltd., a new video game development studio based in Tokyo, Japan. PROPE, Ltd. will develop original content for the next generation consoles.

Effective June 1, 2006, Mr. Naka will leave his post as Creative Officer for Research and Development at SEGA Corporation and will become CEO and President of PROPE, Ltd. Mr. Naka has been the creative force behind such SEGA brands as Sonic The Hedgehog and Phantasy Star. SEGA will make a 10% investment in PROPE, Ltd. and will be the company's exclusive global publisher. This landmark announcement between SEGA and Mr. Naka is the first arrangement to emerge from SEGA's Game Creator Independence Program, which will be organized to promote entrepreneurial business spin-offs with its internal development talent.

"We named our company PROPE in the hopes of bringing game entertainment much closer to users, establishing closer ties between users and us, and creating near future entertainment," said Yuji Naka, CEO and President of PROPE, Ltd. "I am looking forward to the challenge of embarking on this new entrepreneurial venture supported by such a powerful global publisher as SEGA."

"Mr. Naka is an incredible industry visionary and as SEGA continues to align itself with top development talent, we are extremely excited to partner with PROPE." said Naoya Tsurumi, Chief Executive Officer, SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe, Ltd.

The agreement is the latest in a string of similar announcements from SEGA that underscore the company's increased emphasis on external content development. Previously, SEGA announced partnerships with developers Obsidian Entertainment, Silicon Knights, Bizarre Creations, Monolith Productions (Condemned: Criminal Origins™), and Pseudo Interactive (Full Auto™). SEGA also acquired development powerhouse The Creative Assembly (Total War series) in 2005 as well as US developer Secret Level and UK based studio, Sports Interactive in 2006.

"PROPE" (pronounced "pro-pe") is a Latin word which means "beside" and "near" future. Future information for PROPE, Ltd. will be announced on their website at http://prope.jp

Bad news from the official Phantasy Star Universe website today. Phantasy Star Universe's Japanese release has been pushed back to March 30th for both the Playstation 2 and PC versions. The reason Sonic Team gave for delaying the game is that the development team wanted some more time to add more content and make sure everything is polished.

Credit goes to to DizzyDi for discovering this news. If you would like to express your reaction to this news, you can post it in our Phantasy Star Universe forum.
