I dont think you get any other benefits from a gold account than being able to recieve the items from demo weekends, and being able to play the demo itself

Many games come with a 1-month free trial for Xbox Live. Make multiple GamerTags and multiple characters. Then just load up on the weapons, transfer them to your main account. Profit. Make sure that you do not renew the 1-month XBL accounts.

The demo items are fine but mostly worthless, so it's not that big of a deal. I think you'll do better waiting a week or two after they are delivered and then looking for them in player shops; depending on their uselessness they can be rather cheap (of course, never NPC-level cheap).
