everyone uses them cuz the new ones are realistic sounding, looking, and whatnot I guess...

Possibly the lowered STA on monsters has them showing some colors other than "blech." They often did decent damage and were faster than crossbows, but that single shot and low SE just hurt 'em.
They're not that good. They just try to recreate the feel of the old style magnums, one of the several components necessary to recreate the old-west character in PSU.
Not to mention acrotechers need something to hit people in the sky.
Um... but Acrotechers get twin handguns, which were always good.
