yeah.. kindoff true.. But I didn't feel like fixing it while I was half way coloring it.. She is not young though.. its a) a FOnewearl and b) I *tried* to draw the perspective slightly from above.. thats why she looks a little shorter (yeah I suck at perspective drawing) and you look straight in her jugs

but.. yeah.. your right about it.. they just ARE to big..
I always prefer to draw girls with slightly exaggerated curves.. but this is too much for me as well..

A bit of resdesigning the work space could of detorued my eyes a bit, like, the weapon being more in your face, or the actual spell (which is alittle underwhelemd by the girl again.)

Well its still a good work :v

    heh thanks

yeah.. it's serveral mistakes I made.. especially the feet are distorting the perspective.. but I am proud that I didn't use a real photo to draw this.. just a picture in the Udon art book of Akuma Blazing with power.. I just couldn't resist to try something like it.. but it was hard and learnfull

Tutorial will follow in a few minutes..

Ubar Fony Tutorial: Digital art in Photoshop
    --------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER: This tutorials is not about “how to draw” but it gives you some nice idea’s and tricks for digital drawing (and especially coloring) in Photoshop CS3. If you don’t like it… STFU.. I am just trying to give others a peek in how I do my coloring!
    --------------------------------------------
    SKETCHING

Alright here we go! I assume you already got a tablet, if you don’t just skip this step and start sketching on paper! I prefer a tablet over paper for the following reasons:
    • No lines and junk left behind from your eraser.
    • You can easily move lines up and down if they are just placed a little wrong.
    • You can add ALOT more detail on high resolutions.
    • CTRL/CMD+Z….

For this pic I created a new document with the following settings:

The next thing I do is creating a new layer to start sketching on.
Next I setup the brush like this:

Next start sketching on a zoom of 12,5% or 25%. The best way to sketch with a tablet is by making quick strokes, as if you are using a pencil.
When you start sketching stuff like clothes or hair, I recommend to create new layers for them AND DON’T FORGET TO LOCK ALL THE OTHER LAYERS YOU ARE NOT WORKING WITH!!!

The result of my sketch looked like this:

    -------------------------------------------------------
    LINING

Now time for lining.. which is a terribly boring job.. but it’s important if you want clean and detailed lines. The first thing I always do, is putting all sketch layers in a group and decrease the opacity of the group to 50%. That makes it easier to see the difference between the new lines your gonna draw and the original sketch.

Now it’s time to make a new line layers that is on top of all other layers.

For lining I always use a brush between 5 and 15 pixels (on this resolution) for this pic I used 10px and a hardness of 80%

I line most of the time zoomed on 200%, cause on 100% I always get notably wobbly lines.

her is the result of the lining:

    ------------------------------------------------------
    BASE COLORS

    >> new group >> call it color (make sure it is lower than the lines layer)
    >> new layer in color group >> call it Base Color.

Another boring part! DON’T FORGET TO LOCK ALL OTHER LAYERS @##$@$!!!
use the wand tool to select the part you want to color in the “Lines layer”.. now you think you can color in you new color layer? RIGHT?… WRONG YOU SON OF A … always.. I repeat: ALWAYS expand the selection when you use the wand tool, or else you leave behind an ugly white trace around your lines! how you do that? easy: (in the menu) SELECT >> MODIFY >> EXPAND >> and than expand ((brush size of the lines / 2) -1). so when your lines are 10px thick, expand 4px.

YES! now you can finally color your basic colors! pick some nice ones.. and than it will look like this:

    -----------------------------------------------------
    SHADE LV1

new layer in the group “color”, call it shade lv1

Now it’s time for the first shading part, first determine your lights. But don’t forget that it’s is impossible to have only one light source, so just make sure it looks pretty!

I always use a big soft brush like this one

and this is how I pic the shading color! make sure your shading color is not to light, make it a bit colorfull! like this:

When shading just select the part you want to shade in your “basic color” layer. if it selects to much, deselect it in the “lines” layer with the Wand, by clicking while holding ALT.
The result of my first shade level looks like this:

    -----------------------------------------------------
    SHADE LV2

new layer in group “color”, call it shade lv2

Time for the second shading part finally starting to get interesting… First paint the whole layer white with the paintbucket, and change the blending of the layer to “color burn”

Now grab a black, soft brush around 500px and an opacity of 15%, like this:

Now select the stuff you want to shade in your “basic color” layer. and start making big fat, soft brush strokes, Do this for the same part around 4 times (or until you think the shading color is dark enough).

The layer looks something like this:

And the result looks like this:

    --------------------------------------------------
    SHADE LV3

new layer in group “color”, call it shade lv3 (by the way, DON’T YOU DARE TO FORGET LOCKING LAYERS!)

Time for the third shading part this one is a lot more interesting… again like in Shade lv2, make the whole layer white, and change the blending to “Linear Burn”, like this

Now pic a soft black brush that is half the size of the brush you used for Shade lv2, with an opacity of 5%, like this:

Again select the part you want to shading in your “basic color” layer… and start making strokes. about 2 or 3 strokes on one part is enough most of the time. This is what the layer looks like:

    and this is the result:

    --------------------------------------------------
    SKY SHADE

Sky what?? yeah.. I like to call it sky shade, eventhough it’s actually “lighting”… Well what is it? I use it to give the skin a more natural color that blends better with the rest of the pic. Most of the time it is a blue glow from the sky, that reflects on the human skin. for this pic I made it purple because of the heaven punisher that I was gonna draw.

For this I pick a brush around 500px, soft and an opacity of 25%… and a greyish/blueish color.. like this..

then I select the part I want to color (mainly the skin) and I start making strokes at the shadow side of the skin. 2 strokes over the same part is most of the time enough to give a good result. The layer looks something like this:

    and the result like this:

    ----------------------------------------------------
    CASTED SHADOW

This is what really starts to give some depth to the pic! what is it? I usually draw it on the edge of the shadow side of the character, and also under every piece of clothing/hair that casts a shadow on the rest of the body.

First create a new layer and give it a nice name. Change the opacity of the layer to 60%. Now pic an almost black version of you “Sky shade” color, and start drawing the shadows with a soft, 90px, 100& opacity brush like this:

The layer will look something like this:

    And the result like this:

    ---------------------------------------------------
    SPECULAR LIGHTING

This is the global light reflection of the character.
First create a new group and call it something like: “Lighting”
Now create a new layer called: “Specular”.
Paint the complete layer black, and change the blending mode to “Color dodge”

Now pick a white brush, soft, 400px, 6% opacity, like this:

Now start making strokes around the middle of the body parts (so not on the opposite edge of the shadow). Two strokes at the right place should be enough.
The layer will look something like this:

And the result something like this:

    ----------------------------------------------------

You can additionally add some gloss in the eyes in either the specular layer, or a new layer.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Thats all for part 1, the background and FX will follow later

    ----------------------------------------------------
    Some tips:
    • Don’t forget to make good use of the pressure sensitiveness of Wacom tablets!
    • Be creative! Always try some new idea’s when coloring.
    • Never use the eraser in a Color/linear dodge/burn layer! instead switch between white and black brushes! (black for dodge and white for burn, to erase).

oh yeah.. here is the .PSD file

Cool. I like the tutorial, and the picture too. (heh, boobs. )

Your drawing style is actualy somewhat the same as mine. But I guess part of my problem was that I have been using the Dodge and Burn tools to shade. I sure this could help, so thanks for puting it up.
