Wow, this is rather interesting. A little off-topic but one time, my brother was walking a friend home, and then, he saw some old lady wearing torn up rags floating in the air, and she didn't have any legs. I'd think these things are more or less caused by the poor focus our eyes have on our peripherals, and combined with the dark lighting conditions the brain could recognize things as humanoid shapes even though they aren't.

I'd be more concerned if I saw something like this in lighted conditions.
