    Male or Female Character Choices

Mtv's MP blog has squeezed out another article from last week's interview with Jay Wilson, this one focused on the issue of character gender in Diablo 3. As we know, all of the characters in Diablo 3 can be played as male or female, and while their abilities will be exactly the same, their graphics are not. The D3 team didn't just slap a different skin on the same wire frame; they're doing entirely different animation styles for the genders, though they'll obviously be somewhat similar since they use the same spells and skills. Unsurprisingly, this is a lot of extra work:

Wilson also told me that in making these unique archetypes, that meant having to create custom models. Add different genders to that, and its not cheap. Its pretty expensive for us art-wise because of the way we do our classes and the way we do a lot of the weaponry we create, he said. And essentially doing [different genders] adds a lot of model artwork. World of Warcraft was very smart about how they chose their class models and their NPCs, because they were very efficient with the number of models that they made. We were not.

Even if it is, sounds like a stampede of failure. Diablo games really need a keyboard...

We all remember what happened with the first one releasing on the PlayStation.

ProTip: To damage your credibility, simply call any of the Phantasy Star games "massively-multiplayer."

SCFreelancer just sniffed up a very interesting press release, quite well timed with the AMD Cinema 2.0 event in New York. It appears Blizzard and AMD is tying some sort of knot, and would it be blasphemous to hope we Cinema 2.0 effects WoW/SC2/D3?

    Blizzard And AMD Join Hands
AMD and Blizzard Entertainment Join Forces in Strategic Global Agreement

-- Collaboration helps ensure rich experience for World of Warcraft gamers playing on new AMD ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics cards--

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- August 12, 2008 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Blizzard Entertainment that will allow AMD to bundle Blizzard's best games across all ATI Radeon graphics products, to deliver a superior gaming experience. As the exclusive graphics sponsor for BlizzCon 2008 in Anaheim, Oct. 10-11, AMD will treat gamers to the unparalleled graphics capabilities of the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series in all PCs for game play at BlizzCon.

"Blizzard Entertainment is responsible for the hottest titles in PC gaming and AMD is excited to be working closely with one of the top development teams in the industry to deliver exceptional gaming experiences for players around the world," said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, Graphics Products, AMD. "Gamers have a variety of choices when it comes to graphics cards, and those who choose ATI Radeon solutions can be confident their purchase will give them the visually rich, high-performance experience they expect."

"Our collaboration with AMD is especially important to us because it provides us with early access to some of the latest graphics technology," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "Delivering a polished game experience is one of our top priorities, and this relationship helps us achieve that goal for Blizzard gamers who choose AMD graphics cards."

AMD is committed to helping PC gamers around the world enjoy The Ultimate Visual Experience. The collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment underscores the mission of its recently announced AMD GAME! initiative, which is dedicated to providing consumers the information they need to help them better understand gaming technology and thus purchase the right systems and components they need to best meet their high-definition gaming needs.

Elsewhere, Bashiok replies to a guy who actually tries the "my friend works at EB and he says D3 will be out in 3 months."

Blizzard Quote: Release date rumor put to rest.

There has been no release date announced, shared, hinted at, or otherwise imagined. Retailers may have dates in their computers which someone at their company made up, none of them have anything to them other than best-guess work. This is how video game pre-orders work.

    ...there's no standard announcement-to-release formula.
Despite the exciting title of this post, the info is pretty pedestrian. Bashiok made a couple of forum replies today, addressing misconceptions amongst the bnet forumers.

In the first he follows up his post from last week, about D3 beta keys and the Blizzcon goodie bag.

Blizzard Quote: Bashiok on Beta Testing and Release Date

I think the wording in my original post got some people thinking I was hinting that any included beta key would undoubtedly be used for a Diablo III beta.

That was not my intent, and as I said any beta key we give out on those cards could be used for any purpose deemed necessary. If the Wrath of the Lich King beta is still going after BlizzCon and we want more testers, then it could be used for that if we wanted.

My original post was only meant to say that regardless of what a beta key is used for, you should still attend as you won't be disappointed.

    Battle.net To China - Diablo 3 Release 2012?

It seems to have been the day for announcements yesterday, as both the AMD/Blizzard "Alliance" and the Blizzard/NetEase licensing deal was announced.

This is another confirmation that Battle.net 2.0 will be released with StarCraft II, and it's possible that older games such as Diablo II will lack compatibility!

China only gets StarCraft II, Warcraft III and the WarCraft expansion for the next three years after StarCraft II is released, with a mutual renewal period. The question is but does this mean Diablo III won't get released before 2012, or will they re-negotiate mid-way, as it's not on the agenda yet?

Blizzard has announced that this year's Blizzcon is entirely sold out, so if you were debating whether or not to buy tickets... you don't have to worry about that any longer. I guess that means that my road trip to anaheim is off huh? *cough*

Blizzard Quote: Blizzcon Tickets Sold Out

Tickets to BlizzCon 2008 are now sold out. We'd like to thank everyone once again for their overwhelming interest in this year's show. If you were unable to secure tickets, please keep in mind that DIRECTV will be broadcasting BlizzCon live from the Anaheim Convention Center on October 10 and 11. In the meantime, keep an eye on the BlizzCon 2008 website for updates on panels, exhibits, events, and more. We look forward to meeting some of you at the show!
Update: Blizzard's president Mike Morhaime has posted an open letter apologizing for the MMO-launch style technical problems that made buying tickets so difficult. He also says that 3000 more tickets will be sold via a lottery system, so if you missed out in the mad rush, don't give up or hock a kidney and turn to ebay yet.

    Blizzard Quote:TO Blizzard Gamers,

On behalf of everyone at Blizzard, I want to apologize for the challenges and frustrations you experienced while trying to purchase BlizzCon tickets on Monday and Tuesday. BlizzCon is about the positive experiences you all have had with Blizzard games. As a result of this week's events, the excitement that many of you felt about the show has turned into dissatisfaction and disappointment.

Due to these circumstances, we've reevaluated our convention hall space and come up with some solutions that will allow us to offer 3,000 more tickets for sale. We know this will not be enough to satisfy the very high level of demand for tickets this year, but we want to ensure that BlizzCon remains a great experience for those of you who are able to attend. To avoid the issues many of you faced this week, we'll be selling these 3,000 via a lottery. We'll post further details once our plans are finalized. Please note that the lottery will only be open to those with an active Blizzard Account as of 9:00 PM PDT on August 12, the time that the “Sold Out” notice was posted.

I, and everyone else at Blizzard, share the frustration and disappointment that many of you have expressed as a result of this process. We'll do what it takes to avoid this type of situation in the future.

    Sincerely,
    Mike Morhaime
