So what are these spheres and how do I get them?

To obtain sphere you have to do the scrap ghost II mission in S rank.
To do so, kill the "SEED" monsters (plant like) whenever a message appears on the screen and on the right of the screen the white characters change into red, meaning the gauge (green at first, then orange and red) is rising.
To have S you have to kill the SEED quickly, doing so, the gauge won't go into orange.
With those spheres (and photon cristals) you can exchange item in the unrecorded order mission download (the first in the sownload section of the colony mission).
Concentrate on SEED monsters always give an S rank rather easily. There's just the last room that may sometimes be dangerous.
