Wifi help

I'm new to DS wifi play. I have a few questions. I searched around but didn't find any answers.

I was on a run in free play and a friend got on- i guess thats what it ment it beeped and showed his name. Then it kept beeping and showing a green icon from him several times. Was he inviting me to a game? I looked at him in my friend roster later and there was a red icon beside his name. What does that mean? Most of the time all my friends are in gray writing. Does this mean they are not online or that they haven't added me.

How do I trade online? Can you only trade with friends?

Any help would be appreciated.
