First of all, if you plan to play it via Free Course, don't. Free Course is terrible. No access to your room is game-breaking debilitating. It is impossible to gain anything semi-decent.

The game gives you a free 10-day key for full access. The shops are really cheap, so I spammed missions like crazy and stocked up on enough to keep me supplied for a while.

As for the population, there's pretty much no one under level 130, so you'd better be prepared to solo everything.

Also, there's still the Tokyo Game Show coming up in about a week. If the rumors about Sega announcing a new game for PSO's 10th anniversary are true, then that may give you something else to look forward to instead.
