is it recommended to complete story mode before going online? if so, how long can i reasonably expect to finish story mode?
Yes, since if you host, you can only go to the areas you have already gone in the story mode.
As far as time taking to beat it, I give you about an hour a mission, maybe more for the later ones, so maybe about ten hours of playtime to beat it, maybe?

Yes you should probably beat story mode before you go online. All in all it should take you 5-10 hours to beat the story and be able to access hard.
