You usually needed a boat or an aircraft that can properly fly in the atmosphere and over water to get over it. Even if that water was 1, 2 or 3 squares wide.

52 weeks in a year Plus a few double page's out at the same time. Should put it between to 1 3/4 - 2 years. But yeah, It's amazing it's been this long.
The first pages were posted on April 16th 2011, so it hasn't quite been two years yet.
