With backgrounds you can just dick around, do some cool colors and lighting and no one will notice how crappy it actually is. Humans on the other hand, everyone can see even the smallest mistakes and errors, because thats what our brains are tuned to. I am not really better at one or the other imo, just that background automatically look more impressive to most people.
@Shin: Thats always the dangerous part. Painting without a sketches fixes this a bit. Staying rough is usually a good thing and makes it look more alive and less artificial. Put more importance on how you distribute light and color in the background then the details. For backgrounds its the big picture that counts, not the details. Nobody zooms in on artwork anyway. If thumbnail doesn't look good, no one will click on the picture anyway.
@Yoshi: No not really. I intended it to be the banshee boss area, which is mostly grass with some trees and most of the bushes in the background.
