my friend ALWAYS does this to me! he always forgets to transfer my character back to my mem card..... now... question.... if I cancel the transfer status, do I lose anything??.. aside from everything I earned while it was transferred??

you lose every thing but your charicter lv

First off, you don't lose materials used.
If you cancel the transfer staus, you'll lose all items on the character. (Bank and Item pack)
