Question regard Section ID's and Drops...

If my friend and I were playing Multiplayer, is it possible to get one of they're drops even if we don't have the same Section ID's? For Example, I'm a Skyly, he is a Purplenum, Is it possible for me to open a box and get something he gets from the box that I can't?

I was wondering because I seem to remember something like this happening, I just wanted to ask this to see if this "memory" really happened or not...
