Painting means you are not rendering/CG-ing the picture using tons of layers and FX and linework, but simply use a brush to fill the screen with values and colors. What's great about painting is that you can change and add stuff by just painting over with the brush, which increases the freedom of what you can make. I use a mixture of painting and FX to make my pictures.
I think it looks great! You should try painting more. Also try painting backgrounds. It's lots of fun!
