Writing in cursive wasn't hard, nor hard to read. In fact I preferred it because I ended up writing a lot faster.
I don't think anything I learned in school was completely useless, maybe reading Wuthering Heights, but that's it.

Its kinda hard for me to read and I don't really use it outside of a signature.
I remember taking the SAT and choked. I had the whole alphabet in my head and as soon as the test started, I was sitting there like a moron. Was the only guy who needed the teacher to write the alphabet in cursive on the board. Not sure if I saved a few doods the embarrassment.
Really, cursive writing? Back when I was in school we were happy if we...... eh..

It really depends on the language and country as to whether script is dead. In my Russian classes I had a professor who insisted everything be written in cyrillic script and not print. Truth be told it was faster and looked beautiful over traditional cyrillic print. I still maintain cyrillic script is one of the most beautiful forms of writing I've ever seen because of how well it flows.
My 5th grade teacher use to tell us that middle school will only accept cursive. I get to middle school, and I was like nope.
