    Yeah, I think the whole thing is just a stunt to motivate people. I bet there'd still be progress even if nobody was playing.
    They're not going to tell us "oh hey, you all missed out on these once-in-a-lifetime rare items and events because other players didn't play enough! TOO BAD!"

    Among various other neat 10*s, I managed to find my favorite weapon from the first game during one of those darker den cradle quests.
