I'm also not too keen on the idea of being mayor. One of the big attractions to Animal Crossing, for me, was that the player was just some regular citizen just doing his/her day-to-day business, and that the town could run without him/her. I'm sure it's not going to be a big deal, though.

Actually, any character made after the first on the same file is a villager. You could have a separate character for mayoral duties if you wanted to and have your regular old villager character in the second slot.
