How was this possible as the +33 current grind weapon had grind cap of 33, and the +8 current grind weapon had a grind cap of 30?

I think I solved my problem, it seems that special untek some weapons will sometimes have its grind cap at +31 or more now, since my +8 fodder was a drop, most likely it had a +31 grind cap without the need to using another of the same weapon to grind the +8 fodder

Yeah, that was likely it. Additionally, it looks like they fixed the whole "if your level is at cap, then you will just raise the cap, but not get the EXP" thing; I just tested it, and it will now give you the EXP rather than it being lost.
