Maybe Xion and Luthor were experimenting on it, or trying to find ways to use it as an energy source. Thus we have photon technology, which is the only way to completely kill darkers, but whatever was going on Xion regrets for some reason, but Luthor want's to continue anyway. Either the great light isn't as complacent as they thought, or by doing what they're doing they're weakening it, and causing an imbalance.

Did the stream say that it was a new field? It kind of looks like a story/eq only thing, since this is probably the "Oracle's collapse" that the Ep2 teaser mention. I'm betting Bird Falz awakens, and destroys the mothership while awakening.
