They may have an agenda, but they have no way of forcing it upon the reader directly. For example:

That might be a silly example, but hopefully you get what I mean. As far as my own stories go, I actually prefer a certain level of detachment between the narrator and the reader. Some fairly harsh things have happened in my stories, things I would never wish upon my readers. Like, “Your entire family is slain by Darkers in front of your eyes, leaving you a hollow shell of a person.” I want my readers to feel for the characters, not to experience that kind of trauma firsthand. And yes, I know that simply telling a reader what to feel isn’t the same as them actually feeling it. But I’d still feel bad about forcing it on them that way.

I do, however, think a PSO2 “Choose Your Own Adventure” story would be pretty awesome. If done right.
Yeah, I can see your point; it is all really about the execution, in that it can either basically high-jack the reader and force them to be unwillingly complicit (like in an RPG where you are forced to do something by the narrative that you would never do otherwise), or be handled in a way that immerses the reader into the mind of the character. And of course, it all does really come down to the story that wants to be told and what authorial intention is for the piece. Every author is different, and creates their own style, so there is nothing wrong with avoiding other kinds if you feel there is nothing to gain from them (like how I avoid any and all forms of poetry).

Random tangent that I need to get out but is basically irrelevant:
    Spoiler!

@Zorafim: A collaborative choose your own adventure like you are describing there is a really interesting idea, though I imagine it works best when not using any previously established characters to really give the authors free reign to build.

Yeah, you're definitely right. How the story is presented depends on the author. There needs to be a certain level of trust between the reader and the author, since the author is basically hijacking the reader's free will. But I can imagine it being fun if you're willing to go along for the ride! Personally, if I were to try writing a second-person story, I would probably present it as a mystery. Something that the reader is trying to uncover. Solving a mystery from your own point of view sounds like it would be really cool.
