Ok thanks guys, Now I have some pace of mind. I thought there was no way around 0 slot equipment.

If you run across a unit/weapon with 0 slots you can use fodder units/weapons with up to 2 slots. anything else the number of slots have to match. So if you have a unit/weapon with 1 slot your fodder needs to have 1 slot. If your unit/weapon has 2 slots then your fodder needs to have 2 slots and so on. Plus there are Ability Success Rate boosts.
