Just a quick note. I'm going to be away next weekend so I won't be posting a new story chapter then. That will give anyone who's behind an extra week to catch up.
CHAPTER 17.4 [4/1/17]
Spoiler!
COLONY SHIP 02, UR: HANGAR BAY M-19
- 0800 hours -
Clip, clop. Clip, clop.
Four pairs of boots and one pair of mechanical feet slapped against the cold metal floor. The footsteps echoed like thunderclaps down the sloping tunnel. No one spoke.
The five figures marched onward in silence, each propelled by a different motive. For one, it was duty. For another, family. And still another, adventure and excitement. But no matter the reason, they all came together for a common goal. Their mission: to save Terra Nova, defeat Typhon, and (hopefully) destroy Orpheus once and for all. Only one thing was for certain: it was going to be a long day.
A faint cacophony of sound reached their ears. A mixture of voices, machinery, and PA announcements. The further they walked, the louder it got. Eventually the rising din drowned out their own footsteps.
A rectangle of white light appeared ahead. They kept walking. The rectangle grew larger. It kept growing until it filled their vision, blinding them. And then—
They stepped out of the tunnel into the hangar bay. Colors and shapes resolved themselves into various forms: soldiers, equipment, campships. Everywhere they looked was a mass of activity. Cargo and soldiers being loaded onto transports. Weapons and ammo being inspected. Last-minute instructions being given. It was an operation on a grander scale than anything they’d ever seen. And they were part of it.
Akasha was overwhelmed. She took a few deep breaths to calm her pounding heart. This is it, she thought. The big day. The day they finally put a stop to her brother once and for all.
She was ready. As ready as she was going to be, anyway. She was wearing a brand-new outfit, a beige and black Heart Breaker that matched the colors of her old combat uniform. A pair of shiny twin daggers was slung across her back. They were standard issue. Nothing fancy, and not nearly as nice as the custom Lambda Hellfret double saber Captain Colton gave her before. But they would get the job done, and that’s what mattered. Unfortunately, her old weapon and uniform had been left behind on Orpheus. Akasha doubted she would ever see them again—especially if the ARKS’s plan succeeded.
Walking beside her, Ivan swallowed hard. He looked about as nervous as Akasha felt. Not that he’d ever admit it, of course. He always tried to act strong for the people around him, one of his many endearing traits. Akasha tugged on the sleeve of his navy blue Punish Jacket. “Hey, you okay? You look a little pale.”
Spoiler!
“Hm? Oh, yeah. It’s nothing, Pipsqueak. Just feeling a bit drained. Don’t think I got a wink of sleep last night.”
“That’s why I told you to stay home.”
“And like I told you, that isn’t going to happen.”
“You’re not even with the ARKS anymore. What, you think they’re just gonna let you on the campship if you ask real nice and say pretty please?”
“Won’t know unless I try, right?”
Akasha let out a defeated sigh—though, secretly, she was glad to have him along. Wasn’t too thrilled to be putting him in danger, though. She’d never forgive herself if something happened to him. Not after what happened to—
A gloved hand on Akasha’s shoulder interrupted her train of thought. It belonged to her mentor and guardian, Arin Colton. “What about you?” he asked. “Sure you don’t want to turn around and go home? It’s not too late.”
Spoiler!
“I’m fine,” she insisted, trying to sound confident. “Really! Don’t try and talk me out of this. I need to be here. I want to be.”
“Alright. In that case, I won’t ask you again.”
They walked past a crowd of soldiers gathered around a single man. The man was massive—tall and broad-shouldered, with long blonde hair and a hint of beard stubble. His shining blood-red armor, along with the giant sword strapped to his back, made him look like a knight out of the old legends. He stood out from the rest of the pack—not just because of his size, but by his mere presence. The man looked relaxed and confident, a sharp contrast to the group surrounding him. He was even smiling and laughing!
“That’s Major Helden Krauser,” said Aki02, noticing Akasha’s interest. “Field commander of Operation Heaven’s Lance. The team leaders all take their orders from him.”
Spoiler!
“Whoa, he’s almost as tall as I am! Er, used to be. Er, will be again. Probably.”
“You don’t know Helden Krauser? He’s practically a living legend!” exclaimed Luna, Aki’s pink-haired support partner. “The top-ranked ARKS Hunter right now. They say he was invited to join the Council of Six but turned it down. Crazy, right?”
Spoiler!
Colton glanced around. “Speaking of which, I don’t see any Council members here. Are they not taking part in this op?”
“Supposedly they are preoccupied with more important matters,” said Aki. She added, “If you can believe that.”
The group pressed onward. Past Krauser, past a squad of hurried maintenance techs, past a heap of crates filled to the brim with rifles, machineguns, and launchers. Eventually the sea of soldiers parted and they found themselves standing before their destination. It looked like any other campship, slate gray with angled wings and a hooked tail. On one side, close to the nose, the designation “MCS-15A Athena” was stenciled in large white letters.
Standing beside the ship was a single blue-and-white Caseal. From her posture and disposition, Akasha surmised she was someone of authority. Probably the team leader. In any case, there was only one way to find out. Akasha and Ivan approached her with something between trepidation and confidence.
“Um… uh, excuse me?” said Akasha. “This is Team Athena, right? I think this is where I’m assigned to be.”
The Caseal looked her up and down. “You think, or you are?”
“I am,” she replied, more confidently.
“Good. I don’t like my team not knowing where they belong. And you are correct, Akasha. You are indeed assigned here.” Her purple-eyed gaze shifted to Ivan. “You, however, are unfamiliar to me. You’re not part of this team. Please locate your assigned team or leave the docking bay immediately.”
Ivan put up his hands in a halting gesture. “Now wait just a minute! I know I wasn’t formally invited to the team, but I have ARKS training and I know healing Techniques. Give me a chance and—”
“Your offer is appreciated but not required. Team Athena consists of four squads of four soldiers each, for a total of sixteen members. There are no open spots available. Even if there were, we already have three qualified Technique users, two of whom are aboard as we speak. As I said, you will have to leave.”
Ivan was about to protest further when Aki stepped up beside him. “Is there a problem here, Galatea Mark-5?”
The blue-and-white Caseal was taken aback. “Captain Aki02! I’m surprised to see you here. I heard you resigned your commission.”
Spoiler!
Aki smiled faintly. “I did. General Valias reinstated it yesterday. Captain Colton and I will be leading Stage Two of the operation.”
“I see. Well, I for one am glad to have you with us. During our missions together I was always impressed by your performance. It was one of my inspirations for joining the officer corps.”
“You’re an officer now? Congratulations.”
“Captain, actually. The same as you. From now on, please refer to me as Captain Galatea Mark-5.”
“Very well, Captain.” Aki inclined her head as a measure of respect. “Now then, is there a reason you won’t admit Mr. Malloch here to your team? He is hard-working and capable. I can vouch for him personally.”
“Coming from you, that means a great deal. But in this case it’s irrelevant. He is not on my team roster, so I can’t admit him.” Galatea pressed a button on her wrist and a holographic list of names materialized in the air. Sixteen names, including Akasha’s. Ivan obviously wasn’t on the list. “Like names, rules are important. I cannot simply disregard them whenever I wish. Only a higher-ranking officer can supersede my orders. And unfortunately, you are no longer qualified to do so.”
“I understand. However, Mr. Malloch was approved by General Valias himself.”
What?! Akasha was confused. Valias never gave Ivan permission to come along. It hadn’t even been discussed. So what was Aki talking about?
“He was?” asked a bewildered Galatea. “If that’s true, why wasn’t I informed? Why isn’t he on my roster?”
“You’re being informed right now, by me. There… wasn’t time to update the roster.”
She’s lying, Akasha realized. She’s lying for our sake. The Newearl felt a little guilty. But more than that, she felt grateful. Grateful to have another person she could rely on.
Galatea stood there for a moment, considering her options. Finally she said, “Very well. We could use a dedicated medic on the team. Mr. Malloch, was it? Welcome to Team Athena.”
Ivan was dumbfounded by the sudden reversal, but he didn’t argue. “Ah… thanks! Thank you, Captain Galatea. You won’t regret this. I promise.”
“Captain Galatea Mark-5,” she responded.
“Huh?”
“Address me as Captain Galatea Mark-5. That is my name. If you’re going to be on my team, I expect you to get it right.”
“Sure. Uh, sorry.”
Behind them, Colton cleared his throat. “Now that that’s been settled, Captain Aki and I need to get going. Our ride’s on the other side of the bay, and we can’t be late.”
Akasha realized she needed to say something. To express her gratitude to him for… well, everything. For taking her in when she had nowhere else to go. For always looking out for her. For giving her a purpose and a direction in life. If something happened during the mission—heaven forbid!—this might be her last chance to tell him. “Captain, I…” She trailed off. There was so much to say, she didn’t know where to start. All she could muster was, “Thank you. For everything. And good luck.”
He smiled back at her. “You too. Don’t do anything reckless out there, okay? Be safe.”
After a short round of goodbyes, it was time to part ways. Ivan mouthed the words “thank you” to Aki, who nodded in return. Then she, Colton, and Luna headed off to their own campship, leaving Akasha and Ivan standing in front of the Athena.
Galatea motioned to the boarding ramp. “Head inside and get strapped in. We’ll be taking off shortly.”
They did as they were told. The inside of the ship was spacious enough to accommodate sixteen soldiers and a pilot, not to mention all of their gear. Currently there were a dozen other soldiers seated in the main cabin. Akasha and Ivan sidled down the aisle until they found a pair of open seats. Stowed their weapons in an empty compartment and sat down to wait.
Five minutes passed. At some point Akasha realized the man seated opposite her was stealing glances in her direction. He wasn’t being nearly as subtle about it as he probably hoped. “Something on my face?” she asked.
“Huh?”
“You keep looking my way.”
The man blushed and turned away. “Oh… Sorry about that. You, uh, remind me of someone, is all.”
She hadn’t expected that. Me? Really? I never remind anybody of anyone, ever. Probably because I was a head taller than everybody until last week.
Akasha wondered if they had met before. Maybe she ran a mission with him and forgot about it? But he didn’t look familiar, and she would have remembered a guy like that. His tan skin and glasses were forgettable, but that teal hair was rather distinctive, and the ten-gallon cowboy hat resting on his head was definitely one of a kind. So either she was going senile or she didn’t know him.
She shrugged to herself and stared out the window instead. Another five minutes passed. Outside the campship, the last of the weapons and equipment were loaded up. The crowd of soldiers and pilots scurrying back and forth began to thin out. Must be almost time for departure, she figured.
Akasha was lost in thought when someone plopped down in the seat next to the teal-haired man. In a loud voice the newcomer exclaimed, “What do we have here? I’m being teamed up with a kid and a cowboy? Well ain’t that a regular riot.”
Akasha was immediately annoyed. “I’m not a kid—” she started to say, then looked over and stopped. “Sahara! Hey!”
The newcomer, a short-haired woman wearing a pilot’s cap and goggles, had to do a double take. “A-Akasha? Is that you? Uh… I thought you were taller.”
Spoiler!
“I was.” She flashed the woman a toothy grin but didn’t elaborate.
“Riiight…,” Sahara replied, obviously confused. She turned to the man sitting next to her. “Howdy, space cowboy. What’s your story? And lemme say this up front: this squad already has a crack-shot Ranger—me—so don’t go getting any macho ideas about stealin’ the show, okay?”
He raised his eyebrows. “Actually, I’m a Force.”
Sahara laughed. “In that getup? With Chic Jaeger armor and that ridiculous hat? Coulda fooled me.”
“I have a gunslash, if that helps.”
“As long as you keep it pointed at the Darkers, cowboy. Er, Mister…”
“Yoshiblue. Most people just call me Yoshi.”
Spoiler!
She gave him an incredulous look. “Seriously? What kinda name is Yoshiblue?”
“It’s… more of a nickname, really,” he admitted.
“Yeah, well, I think I’ll stick to callin’ you ‘Cowboy.’ At least until you ditch the hat.” Sahara glanced across the aisle and seemed to notice Ivan for the first time. “How ‘bout you, slick? What’s your photon alignment? No, wait, don’t tell me. Lemme guess. Braver, right? You strike me as a katana man.”
Ivan smiled sweetly and said, “Combat medic.”
“Man, I am way off my game today. At least I know Akasha here’s a Fighter. You are still a Fighter, ain’tcha, kid?”
“That’s right,” she answered. “And don’t call me ‘kid.’”
“Hey, I just call it like I see it. You are much smaller than the last time I saw you, during that mission to Lillipa. Speaking of which, where’s Red? You know, the short spunky girl you’re always hangin’ out with. She decide to sit this one out?”
Akasha froze. A dark pall fell across her face and she fought hard against the tears welling up inside. Beside her, Ivan clenched his jaw. “She… she’s…,” Akasha started to say, but the words refused to come out. She looked down and gritted her teeth.
Sahara got the message anyway. “Oh… Oh. Hey, look, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
Akasha nodded weakly. They sat in awkward silence after that.
* * * * * * * * *
Outside the campship, the large video screens mounted to the walls of the hangar bay suddenly sprung to life. They displayed the image of a podium set atop a flight of steps. It was an outdoor shot in front of a large building. The podium had the ARKS logo emblazoned front and center.
For the first few seconds, nothing happened. Then General Valias strode into the shot and took his place behind the podium. He looked directly into the camera and began to speak. His speech was piped into every campship through the on-board speaker system. It was broadcast live to every video screen aboard the colony ship. Crowds of pedestrians stopped what they were doing to watch. Soldiers at the Academy halted their morning practice. Throughout the city, all eyes and ears were held in eager attention.
Spoiler!
“Ladies and gentlemen, and to all citizens of Ur, greetings. My name is General Rayn Valias, high commander of all ARKS forces aboard this ship. Many of you already know who I am. You may have heard disturbing rumors about me recently, rumors propagated by one of my own colonels. You were told that I was a traitor, that I alone was responsible for the assassination of the Executive Council. These ‘rumors’ were just that—rumors. The truth is this: The UEC was betrayed and murdered by the last king of KAI-OS, Lee Okada. Recently, the ARKS became aware of a plot to infiltrate and overthrow the government. In order to root out the traitors, we had to spread these lies in order to lull them into a false sense of security. And, I can gladly report to you now, the KAI-OS plot has been thwarted and the criminals apprehended. All of them save for one: Okada himself. But as I stand here, I assure you, we will find him. We will catch him. And we will bring him to justice for what he has done. That is the promise I make to you, the people of Ur.
“I know some of you may still harbor doubts. We have deceived you. We have declared martial law upon you. But today we begin to make things right. Martial law is being abolished here and now, effective immediately. The ARKS hereby cede control of Ur back to the civilian government where it rightly belongs. The election of a new Executive Council will take place shortly. In addition, all those who were unfairly imprisoned are being released.
“I wish to express to you my deepest apologies for what has transpired over the past few days. It was unfortunate—but in some cases, necessary. This KAI-OS plot was nearly the end of democracy aboard Ur, and it was only through the brave actions of a select few that we managed to win the day. All I can ask of you now is your forgiveness, your patience, and in time, your trust.”
Valias paused and glanced down at the podium. He seemed to be gathering his thoughts. When he looked up again there was a new fire in his eyes, the determination of a righteous leader. “There is another reason I’ve come before you today. A matter of great importance and grave consequence. As you’ve no doubt already heard, the fallen colony ship Orpheus broke through our naval blockade yesterday and docked with Terra Nova. An army of Darkers has disabled the station’s defenses and claimed it for themselves. This cannot be allowed to stand. We will not let it.
“Terra Nova is Oracle’s last great hope. It offers us a future free from the Darker threat. Finally, we will be able to live in peace. Finally, our children will be able to grow up safe and secure. Our long nightmare is almost over.” Valias waited a moment to give his next words emphasis. “But that future will not come easily. It will not come without a price. And so, once again, we must stand and fight—for ourselves, for our children, for the untold generations yet to come.”
Back in the campship, Akasha felt a tremor course through her body. The ship’s engines were powering up. Outside the window, the last of the maintenance personnel finished clearing out of the bay. It was time to go.
Valias’ voice was still coming through the speakers loud and clear: “Right now, at this very moment, a regiment of our best troops is heading off to battle. These ARKS are not seeking glory, or adventure, or excitement. They are going because they must, because all our futures depend on it. The time to act is now. At any cost, we cannot let Terra Nova fall.”
The platform under the campship began to rise. As it did so, chatter in the cabin abruptly died off. Slowly but surely, they were ascending towards an opening in the ceiling. It was just large enough to admit them. There was a hiss and a loud click as the platform pressure-locked in place beneath them. They sat there in silence and in darkness, waiting for the launch order to be given. It seemed like forever. And all the while, the general’s reassuring words filled their ears.
“To the brave men and women about to depart, I say to you: Be strong. This mission will not be an easy one. Remember your training. Remember who and what you are fighting for. But also know this: No matter the obstacles you may encounter out there, the monsters you may face, always remember, we are with you. Together we can do anything. Together, we will succeed. We must. It has been a millennium since the hopes of so many rested on the shoulders of so few. On this day, our thoughts and our prayers go with you. Godspeed, heroes.”
A series of hatches opened on the outside of the colony ship. From each hatch emerged a single campship, sixty in total. Each carried a pilot and sixteen soldiers. One of the ships was transporting an extra passenger, a combat medic named Ivan. Altogether there were one thousand twenty-one people taking part in Operation Heaven’s Lance. Based on best-guess estimates, they would be outnumbered more than twenty to one. The acceptable casualty rate was fifty percent. Not that it mattered. They would fight to the last soldier if it came to that. They would do whatever it took to get the job done—anything and everything.
“I leave you now with some advice I once received from a mentor, the late General Zyria Blackstone, who said: ‘Courage—real courage—is not about defeating an opponent on the battlefield. It is about overcoming yourself—your own limitations, your own doubts, your own fears. To do what is right because it is right. To trust your very life to the brothers and sisters fighting alongside you. No soldier is an army, but every army—every one that functions properly—is a soldier. A mass of individuals working in concert as a single entity. Learn to trust your teammates and they will reward you in kind. This, above all else, will keep you alive in your darkest moments.’”
The stream of campships navigated through the fleet like a flock of birds in a migratory pattern. They deftly maneuvered left and right, up and down, always coming back together when space would allow. They passed one colony ship after another: Feoh, Ken, Hagall, Nauthiz. They passed the great Oracle Mothership, the sparkling crown jewel of the fleet. Its radiance shone down upon them like a maternal embrace. Gently guiding them onward.
“To that advice I would add: You are only as weak as you believe yourselves to be. I have seen you train. I have seen you fight. And I know, without a doubt, that you are all worthy of being called ARKS. Today you will prove it. You are going to show both Oracle and the Darkers exactly what you’re made of. Prove to them what I already know: you have no limits. Together, there is nothing you cannot accomplish.”
There was a pause. “You have your orders. You know what must be done. Now go do it. Valias out.”
Sixty pairs of bluish-white efflux trails streaked through the inky blackness. The light of the First Fleet was behind them now. The only thing ahead was dark, open space.
Coordinates were relayed to the pilots aboard each campship. A thirty-second timer counted down to zero. Commands were given, buttons pressed, levers pulled. A beam of light shot forth from the nose of each ship, stabbing into the darkness. Sixty warp portals materialized against the star-laced curtain. The campships rocketed into them and were gone.
Off to Terra Nova.
CHAPTER 17: END
Author’s Notes:
Spoiler!
For anyone unfamiliar with Yoshiblue’s Celestial Saga fanfic, Yoshi’s “you remind me of someone” comment in this chapter was a reference to that story. In a chapter titled “A Mission of a Different Kind,” he took part in a mission to spy on Akasha and Kira on Naberius. That’s why she looks familiar to him despite being smaller now, and why she doesn’t recognize him in return.
50% seems pretty bleak, heh. Would be funny if Yoshi got in, in a similar but different way as Ivan. So he actually has no idea what's going on. Haha. Was also interesting to see the difference between Aki and your average by the book Cast. Will look forward to how you write the fleet/entry/insertion scenes. I'm sure they'll be a lot better than how I did them.
Maybe Yoshi had an interesting backstory for how he got assigned to that mission, but I didn't have time to go into it. You can just imagine it for yourself. In your chapter "Regret, The Candle in a Dark Cave," you talked about how a few weeks had passed since the mission to spy on Akasha and Kira on Naberius, and that Yoshi helped out by volunteering to take part in various missions. Well, this happens to be one of them.
In your mind, what's the difference between Aki and your "average by-the-book CAST"? Just curious to get an outside perspective on that.
To me, a by the book Cast is your stereotypical robot. Strict and orderly. Prefers to stick to the original plan and try to reduce as many deviations as they can, if they can help it. Depending on the situation, prefer to be called by their proper designation or model number at all times (Though in time, by PSU standards, will become more relaxed about it). Will do an immediate cross reference as soon as possible to reduce irregularities. While not actually feeling angry, can easily sound like it due to their strict tone of voice.
That sounds about right. I've definitely tried to evolve Aki's personality over time. If you look back at her early adventures, her reactions then were much more mechanical, less emotional. As she gained friends and mentors she started to open up to people. A few other important life events furthered that along as well. Now she is willing to smile on occasion and bend the rules when necessary. She even laughed one time (Chapter 10).
Aki's evolution isn't over yet. You'll see some pretty interesting changes in the future as well.
I actually didn't expect to see Terra Nova get invaded right off the bat--I think my personal vision for this was a massive battle against Orpheus trying to prevent them from invading, but it didn't seem like they had any trouble with that. With the appearance of Typhon in Terra Nova, the stakes got way higher than my initial prediction and that's pretty cool. There was a lot of action for how much exposition you had to get through in 17.1 and 2 and it was both engaging and informative.
One thing I will mention--and this is basically an impossible task with the complexity of the subject--I'm having a little trouble picturing the structure of Terra Nova. Given its enormous size and the sheer complexity of it, I totally understand how hard that is to do, but maybe I need to pan over the description a little more. I feel like I get the area where Shankar/Typhon is, but the structure of the entire thing is a little muddy to me.
I love having Akasha back--her personality is such a nice contrast to Aki's and it helps balance out the tense, dark atmosphere. Not that I think Aki is cold and boring, but Akasha is a wonderful foil for her, and her dynamic with Ivan is a lot of fun. I still really miss the relationship she had with Kira though I can't imagine Delfoy and Selena aren't involved in Heaven's Lance somehow, so I hope we'll be seeing more of them soon too. And welcome back, Captain Galatea Mark-5 That reveal made me so happy!
Lee actually seems...a bit concerned with their plan after seeing Shankar become Typhon. I wonder how much of this was unplanned...and if Shankar's companion is who I think it is, that conflict is about to get real interesting.
Not being able to completely picture Terra Nova was partly intentional, in the sense that I wanted readers to use their imaginations to fill in the blanks. The story will share more details about the station as it goes on. But to put a better picture in your mind, I decided it's a good time to do a bit of show and tell. So without further ado, here we go!
Terra Nova is roughly cylindrical with a pair of large docking rings. The docking rings are where all sizes of ships can park, everything from a colony ship down to a campship. Here's a quick little sketch I did, with a colony ship size comparison:
Obviously this is an oversimplified design. The image in my head is much more detailed and much cooler, but at least you get the idea. FYI, right now Orpheus is docked with Terra Nova's 'A' ring via a pressurized tube. You can see how big the station is compared to a colony ship.
I looked up lots of pictures for inspiration when coming up with Terra Nova's design. Here are the ones that came closest to what I was looking for:
Spoiler!
Inside the station there is a central spine running along the center of it, with structural supports at fixed intervals. The entire inner wall of the station is considered the "habitable zone" where everyone is going to live. Here's another rough sketch to give you an idea:
It's not just urban development in there, either. There are all kinds of different biomes. There are cities, fields, lakes, rivers, you name it. It's like an entire world on a smaller scale. Here are some inspirational pictures to give you a better picture:
Spoiler!
And though you didn't ask, I figured I'd talk about Typhon a bit too. Just like with Terra Nova, I included some description in the story but left a few things vague so readers could come up with their own image of the creature. Here are some images I used for inspiration when coming up with Typhon's design:
Spoiler!
None of these pictures completely captures what I had in mind. I described Typhon as looking part-humanoid, part-dragon, and all Darker. Its body is covered in black armored scales with patches of glassy spikes sticking out. It has a pair of curved horns on its forehead, two glowing red eyes, and a mouth full of sharp fangs. It also has four leathery wings and a long, barbed tail.
P.S. Don't worry, Selena and Delfoy definitely have a role to play in Season 4. As for Lee's plans and Shankar's mysterious companion, you'll have to wait and find out!
