Default Drop Rates: Where do they come from?

I did a quick search and it's suggested that rates/percentages are grabbed from game code. I'm assuming there was never a player's guide that revealed these numbers.

    What's the definitive answer here?

It's been a long time since I've looked at any of that and it depends on the version, but to take BB for example there is a Rare Table that denotes what the rare item will be for a given enemy, difficulty and section ID abd the chance to have it drop which is then calculated again a Drop Anything Rate (meaning whether or not the enemy drops anything at all when killed.) Not at home atm so I can't check anything or give any examples but maybe someone else can give a better explanation or make any corrections to what I posted.

Thanks for shedding some light, VioletSkye! Any more information is greatly appreciated.

You know, I have this printed out. I think it is in the garage. I need to look for it, since I started playing online again on my Gamecube. Fairly certain it had the drop rates on there too. I will give an update when I find it. Also, I work 10 hour shifts all week, so it may take several days to find this. . . .

The way that VioletSkye described is how it works on all versions. The only difference between BB and the console versions is that the drop table is located client side as opposed to server side.

Here's an example of part of Viridia's Drop chart from GC put into readable form:
    http://i19.servimg.com/u/f19/15/37/99/00/dropch10.png

The chance of the rare dropping is a 1 out of 255% before the drop anything rate and tool drop rate are applied. Even if an item is at a full 255% then there's still a high probability that nothing will drop, or a monomate/Photon Drop/Other Tool will drop. These are handled by 2 different algorithms that work independent of the drop chart.

Thanks for the answer, Kroniedon. Are these known algorithms?
