Alpha 3 was pretty great. That's probably the one I've played the most outside of SFII on the SNES. (Actually, maybe even more than SFII, since my brothers and I never actually owned the SNES game but we did own SFA3 on Playstation.)

For me SFIII was the first one that felt "snk enough" to fully enjoy it, after that the lack of stepping made sf2 and alpha barely playable for me, and SF4 felt too much like SF2 so it was a disappointment.
I can't say anything bad about SFV, it just feels so good playing it I can look the other way with the "launch problems", online had some problems the first couple days (basically very long waits between combats), I had good experiences after that, but it can be improved further for sure (it still takes a little time to find a match), current offline modes give enough money to see season 1 characters within reach without spending extra money. Oh and I paid 29€ for a key at instant gaming, 100% worth it.
