I was going to make a long-winded response about how Progressives™ are bigots by another name, and puppets to the corporate machine they despise so much, but I stopped caring half way through.

And suddenly I care again. This is absolutely right, Z-0. I would say, politically, I'm center-left, but I've been called a right-wing hatemonger because I didn't think a black Spider-Man was worthy of praise. The side pushing for these things so hard are destructive and undermine the efforts of those who brought us here today.

In first-world countries we already have equality. The equality of opportunity has been there for decades. What people are fighting for today is equality of outcome. You MUST fill this quota of black, woman, muslim, gay, and transgender protagonists or you're an evil oppressor. They focus so much on these divisive identity politics. It's only natural that an opposition has popped up to what can easily be construed as an unprovoked attack.

If we could all just be civil there would be no issue, but there's always someone with an axe to grind.

It's either real or it's a dream. There's nothing that is in between.

    @Z-0

A time comes when suppression can't be maintained and I think what people truly think is actually starting to come out and it really is a big deal right now. History is a funny thing because 50 years ago this nation (US) was in the Women's Right movement you know. 50 years really is not a long time. In fact it has not even been 20 years since we had an overhaul of our form of teaching diversity to children in Elementary School...

I think you should focus on the level of severity of those problems back home in England since most of the public internet is actually American webpages you know. We are only 4.3% of the worlds population and studies show that around half our population is connected to the internet on an active basis. This means its around 2.15% of the world's population accounts for 70% of the internet's public activity, while the world's largest private network is China...

in fact it was 51 years ago when we declared that Education will become a serious profession and created the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, and then we re-authorized the act and added accountability of instruction and state-ran testing in 2001 under the name "No Child Left Behind."

My main problem is how boring things are if you don't diversify. If the lead is a middle aged white male, I have little interest in the movie because I've seen that literally hundreds of times. If it's not, then suddenly there's a new story that can be told. Even if there's not, it's something that looks different, so at least it's visually more interesting.
But it does seem to be an established fact that non-white male leads hurt sales. And I think that's a problem. If nothing else, it makes me feel ashamed to be part of a system that fights against diversity.

Diversity is not bad. People are against forcefed diversity in existing franchises, because experience shows that production quality of such entries usually drops drastically. Writers who try to "progressivise"/"diversify" existing franchises that are know and beloved often lack actual writing skills and think that having anything that isn't white male as a protagonist instantly makes the movie/game good. And when people don't buy it, it's obviously because people are bigoted, totes not because dialogue is cringeworthy and story is nonsensical. Consumers see this trend and they are against it. It's just that not everyone can explain it, because for a lot of people it's subconsious.

I still haven't watched The Force Awakens, but, from what I heard, Kylo Ren is essentially Starkiller in a skirt, so I can see why these people don't put high hopes on Rogue One.
What about that new Ghostbusters movie? Absolute shite, but muh sexism....
There's been a new expansion for Baldur's Gate recently... You know the drill. The list goes on.

There are good "diverse" characters which people love. It's because you have to put actual effort when you write one, and some "progressive" graphomaniacs are too lazy for that. It's way easier to mess with the fans of the thing you are in control of, especially if you are not the one who made this thing popular in the first place.

    Where is the diversity?

Female Lead characters that are shallow and one-dimension are everywhere now, and not just for one movie, but usually three or four movies. Twilight, Hunger Games.... Now the new Star Wars set of movies. Remember the Underworld series of movies? Resident Evil movies anyone? At least Aeon Flux (the movie) was just one movie and not any more... Going further back, remember Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2? There was also Sword of Destiny, if anyone ever saw that...

We end up with the same 2 - 3 types of girls you know across these movies....

If you want to have fun, go to youtube and look for Honest Trailers and start looking at all the "Diversity" found in "Female Lead Roles" in movies.....You will find that its pretty much the very same thing, so since "One-Dimensional, but sexually pretty to the young kids Female Lead characters are IN RIGHT NOW" while "decent characters who aren't trying to make a political statement but be one with the setting/world of the story to try to tell the story as sooooo yesterday!"

I mean RYBW is extremely popular right now, and that is also female lead doing the same thing. How about My Little Pony? Female Lead characters (99% female characters), proposed reboot of powerpuff girls (still nearly all female), How about "W.I.T.C.H" (which was interesting and I loved the comic for that....but went from being unique to generic by the end of the story)...

Right now most of the characters I see are female lead characters doing the same thing across Video Games, Books, Movies, Animation, etc....

But you know the terrible super obvious secret of the ages? The super "Ancient Chinese Secret" is that when we are males playing female characters online, the majority of us actually put far deeper thought into actually creating a unique or decent female character that would become our avatar for the games we play than the shitfest we see right now, and that is a fact....and you know it!

The problem with No Child Left Behind was that its implementation is at its core, flawed. Then, Common Core further exacerbated the problems NCLB started. The intentions of NCLB were good, but the path to hell is paved in good intentions. Our education system in the united states is well behind other countries, and NCLB and Common Core did NOT help, but actually aggravated the problem.

This reply, from a teacher who was forced to see things go to hell in the background, and then experience first hand how we were vilified then when NCLB Failed, when it was the lawmakers fault for implementing it in an erroneous manner. We got thrown under the bus instead of backed by our school districts, who didn't want to anger the politicians who provided them with ever-decreasing funding, more and more money every year going to military spending in an endless conflict instead of funding a slowly crumbling education system that they themselves made worse.

Do you know what happens when people do not receive a solid education?

    This does.

Fix the education system and things might actually start to improve. Of course, this is only one aspect of the overall problem. There is so much damage to our society right now, that no quick, instant catch-all Fix exists. It IS going to be a piecemeal, slow process that will take possibly decades before we even begin to see progress because of two factors. American impatience in the current instant information society we have, and the unwillingness of lawmakers to spend sufficient time, effort, and funding on learning the ins and outs of the education mess they have created by not paying enough attention before trying to backseat drive our education system in the first place, and so.... we will see no fix ever, because when effort is made, and no instant repair is seen, they will all give up and move on. Nothing will be repaired.

Newsflash: There hasn't been character (male or female) that have much depth you are demanding in a very long time. Period. I mean, look at Batman: Driven by the death of his parents, in which the normal justice failed him.. Anakin: I want to be a Jedi and impress Padme! Every character played by Clint Eastwood that is not a western: I am going to lock you up bad guys. Deadpool: Hi, I am Deathstr....I mean Deadpool. My name is Sla...I mean Wade Wilson. Oh shit, maybe I should joke this up so maybe no one notices. Daredevil: Motivated by the death of his father and the justice system that failed him, but unlike Batman, is blind and not rich. Punisher: Motivated by the death of his family and the justice system that failed him, but unlike Daredevil and Batman, will kill you.

I know you think diversity = depth, but trust me, Hollywood, video games, comics, haven't had that shit in a long time. Everything is shallow.

Your post proves you know nothing except what comes from the internet and the sheer amount of educators who do not understand law and regulation. I actually read NCLB as well as many other education law.

The nations of the world all have common ground in trying to show how great each are. They can't beat Massachusetts as a state in Education, so they have to show that their average scores against the U.S as nation makes us look weak.

Massachusetts for eight years in a row has beaten the rest of the world in Higher-Education. The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for PreK to 12th grade are 35% more stringent than the common core and people still graduate school. I graduated in 1999 from high school and I was in TAG for two years. When I was in Fourth Grade, I was doing Algebra. When I ended Sixth Grade I was done with Algebra II. Common Core is asking fourth-graders to learn FRACTIONS and Seventh Graders to learn the properties of a circle like a circumference and PI. I was in Seventh Grade to Eight Grade doing Trigonometry and by the time I finished middle school I was doing Precalculus. I had a college-level reading and writing ability when I was in middle school. I was in classes learning high school versions of Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Discreet Mathematics, and Vector Calculus when I was in High School...

Right now Massachusetts ranks the highest in the world in the area of Meta-cognition studies as well as we are #1 in the world in the way we teach and approach students with disabilities.

The way the rest of the world submits their test scores is that they take the Scores of the Ethnic Majority and discard minorities and those with disabilities and use the dominant result. The US itself was outlawed through case law in the use of that practice and we did that in the 50s with only white men (not women, blacks, or the disabled) being candidates for test scores. We knew that the world was not just letter grades, so we changed our scoring system used to measure teachers and held teachers accountable (NCLB) for their practices. We went from defending everything through letter grades and we focused on the Composite Performance Index (CPI) and Student Growth Percentiles (SGP).

I know the history of the common core. The common core is the most amazing thing I have seen in the area of ENGLISH because it was made by English Specialists in Education and Literature Studies. However the central government in D.C said they would not pass the common core standard without a Math Section. They took up two idiots who wrote the math section without verification and that is how we got the Common Core passed.

Common Core is amazing to Follow for English Standards
Common Core is horrible to follow for the Math Standards

However, Like I said, MA is more stringent. We learn variables mid fifth grade. Common Core Teaches Variables in 6th grade. We learn Computations using Fractions in Operations end of third grade/beginning fourth. Common Core asks to teach fractions mid to late fourth grade. We learn to work with circles in 5th to 6th grade. Common Core asks to teach circles in seventh grade. In Massachusetts we teach exponents at the same time we teach measurements of squares and circles. The common core expects an entire unit on exponents to be covered.

It was major international organizations that stepped up and asked the world to submit their report on scores and education tracking on methods in handling those with disabilities....

NCLB combined with IDEA (2004) means that we cant turn anyone away with a disability and we have to help them access the curriculum. Our Education System is split into Three types of Specialist, and not just a Single-Teacher Education System. We have General Education Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Specialized Instructors. We also have BCBA and ABA personnel and psychiatry working together with educators as well.

When the world was forced into submitting its report on those who had Moderate to Severe Disabilities, the Education World was stunned at how far behind teaching practices were outside the U.S as we had entered the new millenium and many were not being given the education that they deserved. The U.S instead of saying "WE ARE BETTER THAN YOU" said "This is horrible, please...let us help you!" and thanks to the United Nations and the World Health Organization, we actually were dispatched across the world to actually help improve programs that taught students with disabilities.

Then came the nation of Singapore, who was one of the first nations to admit their faults and actually conjured up the idea of working with Meta-cognition, but they didnt have the facilities or legal bounds to do as much, so we (the U.S) actually took up the meta-cognition studies. I know because i was one of the test-subjects since i have a registered disability, as I volunteered. People were being collected with their input and real research was done in the US and the US and Singapore Collaborated a lot. Not to be outdone by a small nation, we sought out to learn more about how Culture affects education and we were allowed to research in South Korea, Japan, and China.

While certain provisions in NCLB actually were bad and unrealistic, the accountability of teachers and the way we changed the way we actually evaluated students compared to the world with our large population compared to many nations with dual-digit millions or single-digit millions (I'm looking at you Scandinavia, with your three nations excluding denmark that add up to 20 million people saying shit about our Education system when New York kicked your ass for two years in a row and that state also has 20 million people)..we managed to actually gain a lot more accuracy and we actually managed to actually do the one thing that most nations COULD NOT DO...

...EVALUATE PEOPLE BEYOND just simple letter grade test scores and actually create a system to truly test growth.

So yes, under the conventional system we fall behind the rest of the world. However what is the response to the rest of the world? How about a 6 month to 2.5 year backlog of students who are coming in to Massachusetts to go Study at Harvard, MIT, Boston College and New England Medical Center - Tufts University? People come to Massachusetts because we beat out the world and they know it and everyone wants to learn from us.

So yeah, our education is shit, but everyone is willing to immigrate to the US to go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale and every major college out here....Oxford anyone?

Academia-wise... North, South, East, or West, All Roads lead to Taxachusetts...where everything is fucking illegal, but for some reason can be mysteriously found and bought here! ^_^

Want to learn music? Berkley College of Music along with the New England Conservatory and Mass College of Art is here! If you want pure Graphic Design and pure Elitism, go to Sarasota, Florida and seek out the Ringling College of Art and Design...

You want an education fix? I would be glad to discuss it with you once you spend time in the Education System on a Degree-Based Job and actually have enough knowledge to actually carry on a real conversation with me on the matter that isn't filled with opinions generated by Dr.Google.

This sums up my view on it quite nicely.

Those newfangled Marvel comics where characters who have never been female, or black, or gay, or trans, or what have you are now magically just that - the writing is shit, the production is shit.

Also, yeah, that new Ghostbusters flick. I mean, are you serious? How pandering can a film stupid get? Not to mention how fucking terrible.

Diversity is good. Social progression is good when actually needed and warranted (read: most times when SJWs want it, it's already been there for years). But, do it organically, and do it well. Don't just start throwing characters that identify as greysexual biromantic demikin with shit/shat/shart pronouns at something just to appease the rabid minority.

    Thanks.

No no no no no No!
Diversity is supposed to be about accepting others for what they are and what they bring, not who they are. Liberty is about accepting the individual for who they are. Talk of diversity is everywhere, talk of liberty is almost non-existent; especially when our civil liberties are disappearing left and right...

In creative writing we learn that diversity in writing means representing a vantage point that is not touched upon regularly from alternate points of view outside of the norm. It also affects the storytelling norm. All the examples mentioned fall under the standard archetype of either Roman, Greek, or American Vigilante storytelling forms.

We now have a crossover definition....which is what drives me bonkers...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens attempted to have diversity in writing a character, to try to answer the question "What if a woman was the lead, and how would a woman live in this world?" as well as "how about a stormtrooper turned good to a greater path? These questions created the idea of "storyboard diversity" but the people also believed that these stories were put in to address real world diversity issues. When a real world diversity issue stands above that of the production itself, one has to choose which way to go because one can not simply serve two masters.

The people were smart enough to see through the smoke screen and wonder "would we have these characters if people were not trying to actually send a political message in the first place?" ...and that is why people have mixed feelings about the Force Awakens.

The movie was a commercial success for the same reason the super shitty EA Starwars Battlefront was a commercial success......People love Star Wars and are willing to put in the money to see what its all about. Simple as that...

In Regards to Batman: He is one of the few superhero characters who does not have super-powers and depends on skill + technology + friends/sidekicks/resources to win. I always found that to be interesting......Is it diverse in writing? I say yes, considering that the majority of heroes have some super-power along with a super weakness. Also, look at Dark Knight in how the Joker was done through method-acting (which is the most dangerous form of acting in creation).

What I loved most about Batman in general was that the character is proof that a person without super powers can become a match for a superhero. Also, Batman at its core actually follows the Greek Form of storytelling mixed with American Vigilante storytelling. The character is always trying to come to terms with his past and fights to not become as evil as those he is fighting. It is a central theme to true batman stories. Not the pussified versions that became a staple in the culture as well for children to handle. I prefer the super dark versions......and not the comedic-kids versions...
