That sounds like what they do to J-pop singers after they age over 24 years. They "Graduate" them. Which is a ceremonial firing of 24 too olds to replace with new younger girl booty.

I find that this idea is more believable than just straight up firing him. He was well liked and popular, it'd be dumb to just fire him.
I do know that he's still playing though, he's posted a few screenshots on his twitter recently.
