You know, if I could have been absolutely, positively sure that they were dupers, the temptation to simply take all the stuff without so much as a peep from me at all, and then just release them all to the void later (making them think they screwed up something in their attempted duplication) would have been waaaaaay too tempting...

I think you did the right thing. Personally I would have taken those items and logged on to my own pass protected game put them down and left. Because I would rather find them on my own or trade for them than ruin my fun and use them.

I would have taken the items, sold them right on the spot, and said to the guys, "Here's your items back", and I'd drop the meseta I'd had earned from selling them Not like they need the meseta anyways. 99% chance they have 1,999,998. I'd just do that to show them what happened to their items

Stealing is still stealing, regardless whether they were dupers or not. You probably have unintentionally encouraged them to dupe more "Just in case we ever come across another guy like that". Stealing from them will not make them stop. Showing them truth, and helping them to understand will.
