Well, if you were a guy who had long hair, what would you use to keep it back? You don't see rubber bands everywhere on Pioneer 2, do you?

That depends on how you play the character. If you blast techniques everywhere, yeah, you're going to be running back to town a lot to buy fluids (I guess the FOnewm is a girl to you as well). If you go the melee FOmar route, you'll find yourself going back a lot less since you won't be wasting as much TP. Hell, I'm level 96, and I'm still using Difluids.
