Was the Profound Darkness killed or locked away in Phantasy Star 4?

    Yes, per say.

But the profound darkness (aka. Falz or big bad of the universe that promotes its destruction), comes back every millenium. So yeah, its kinda like a cat. With infinite lives.

PSO was made as a side story and is not directly linked to the PS series. That is the official word on it that Yuji Naka, I beleive it was him, said in an interview about the games. The profound darkness was the being that exsisted behind the universe so to speak. He was the thing that made falz and propelled him into Algol. Kinda like just pushed his hand into the universe to attack the people. In PSIV he was supposed to have been destroyed I think, but really he could only have been sealed away. Even the Great Light could only seal him up, so it stands to reason that man would only be able to do the same, not more.
