It comes from an old game, actually.

The game was called "Zero Wing". It's your basic R-Type type of shooter, and was a hit in arcades in Japan. When it was ported to the Japanese Mega Drive, an intro sequence was added. Then it was ported to the Genesis in the United States, and I assume, the Mega Drive in Europe. The English versions of these intro sequences contained some of the worst translations ever seen in the history of video games. It is from this single game's minimal text alone that we get such amusing phrases as, "All your base are belong to us," "Someone set us up the bomb," and one of my personal favorites, "For great justice!"

Because of the odd use of exclaimation points, for greatest accuracy, "AYBABTU" would be spelled as such--

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US !!
